Maintaining a Friendly Work Environment and Promoting Career Growth Among Employee Development
As a technology, media and telecommunications market leader operating a wide range of businesses, HKT offers a wealth of career development, training and promotion opportunities. The Group is committed to maintaining a wholesome work environment that encourages collaboration and innovation, while promoting a transparent corporate culture and providing multiple platforms on which employees can voice their opinions. Adopting such policies has earned HKT a notably positive reputation in the industry.
HKT has been named an ¡§Employer of Choice¡¨ for the sixth consecutive year and has won the ¡§Health and Well-Being Strategy Award¡¨ for the first time ever.
Bruce Lam, CEO, Consumer, HKT, said: ¡§Employees are the company¡¦s most precious asset, which is why the Group and Consumer Business Group resources into employee benefits and seek to engender a spirit of ¡¥happiness in the workplace¡¦. The two titles conferred on us are an acknowledgment of our talent management success and spur us on to strive for even greater achievement.¡¨
HKT¡¦s Consumer Business Group comprises fixed-line, broadband, mobile communications and media entertainment services and last year launched innovative offerings such as 1O1O HOME, as well as 50G PON super-speed Internet and F5G-A Super Broadband services. Bruce said: ¡§HKT¡¦s Consumer Business Group is staffed by nearly 4,000 employees, of which around 80% are frontline professionals. And we can expect challenges faced by human resources management to increase as our business expands.¡¨
Innovative Training Framework Enhances Leadership Quality HKT¡¦s Human Resources Department has established ¡§Collaborate & LEAD¡¨, a new training framework designed to uplift the quality of leadership among managers throughout various business divisions. The idea is to promote collaboration between departments, encourage innovation and drive business growth.
Progress over the last year has seen HR organising more than 20 training sessions for almost 300 managers in the Consumer Business Group. The main objective has been to develop a positive mindset aided by course content under the subject headings of cross-departmental collaboration, learning leadership, efficient execution, promoting growth and innovative transformation.
Seamless Communications To Help Serve Employee Needs Bruce said: ¡§We last year offered promotion opportunities to a number of high-potential employees, so they could uplift their capabilities, adapt more swiftly to market changes and excel in Consumer Business Group.¡¨
Frontline staff are key to improving service quality, so the division introduced the ¡§Network Reinforcement Training Workshop¡¨ to enhance the way our professionals communicate with customers, improve their industry knowledge and boost their ability to articulate the benefits of csl, 1O1O, NETVIGATOR and Now TV services. The result is they are now more skilful in highlighting HKT¡¦s competitive advantages, creating sales opportunities and elevating the customer service experience ¡V all while optimising operational efficiency.
HKT¡¦s frontline staff work in a variety of outlets throughout Hong Kong and mainland China, so seamless internal communication is especially important. Bruce explained: ¡§The management team and I communicate directly with various frontline colleagues on a regular basis, so we can listen to their opinions and respond accordingly if they offer suggestions on products and services.¡¨
Grooming Employeesto Become Outstanding Managers
HKT¡¦s Consumer Business Group runs multiple training programmes such as the ¡§Supervisory Development Programme¡¨, which assists junior employees to advance their careers by equipping them with leadership skills in organisation, decisiveness and co-ordination. This enables them to play an even more effective managerial role once promoted.
In parallel, the ¡§Team Leader Focus Group¡¨ facilitates interaction between senior management and various team leaders to ensure management objectives and philosophies are consistently understood throughout senior, middle and junior management levels. Focus group meetings often involve discussion around case studies and sharing of leadership skills, as well as reviews and adjustment of management policies and methodologies. This enables managers at differing levels to become excellent leaders, regardless of whether they are newly promoted or senior employees.
Bruce said: ¡§Career counselling is also important to employee development, so department heads perform reviews with newly-promoted employees and provide exclusive guidance to help them build on strengths and address weaknesses ¡V all to help them achieve personal goals.¡¨
HKT is also a great believer in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Acting in the best interests of mental well-being among employees, the Group introduced birthday leave for all employees last year, while the Consumer Business Group organised employee BBQ and excursion team activities to cultivate a sense of belonging and team spirit throughout the company.
